Sarah does love Halloween. And it’s not just the candy. Although I don’t see how we can possibly eat all this candy for at least another year or two. No, what Sarah loves about Halloween is the dressing up in costume and playing with her friends.
Halloween for her started on Friday at school when they did a Halloween parade. First we met in her classroom where her whole class sang some songs for us. Then the whole school got in a line and walked down the street in front of her school. A few people driving by honked their horns in appreciation (we walked on the sidewalk–not down the middle of the street). I took an hour off work just to see it. Very adorable!
Friday night we went to a party next door with our good friends Sarah and Jerremy, and their daughter Hailey and their son Cole. ”Little” Sarah and Hailey are just about best friends, and play together a lot. Our neighbors from the other side also came with their two kids, Bella and Alex. The kids also did crafts, played games, and had a lot of fun.
Then on Saturday, Sarah dressed up as Ariel from the Little Mermaid for Trick or Treating. They went to all the houses in the neighbor hood and brought back some serious loot. I stayed home to hand out candy.
Do stop by the gallery to see the rest of the Halloween pictures (seven total).

Well, we are back from Key West. What a great time! We went with our great friends, John & Kristi and Chris & Michelle. I think I can speak for all of them and say with a fair amount of confidence that we all had a great time. Highlights for all of included some really painful travel stories (John, Kristi, if I had to spend four hours in an airport, I couldn’t think of better people to share that quality time with), getting sea sick on a snorkeling trip, utterly fantastic meals in Key West, walking up and down Duval street, spending hours upon hours swimming and hanging out at the pool, making margaritas in our room so we could save money by not having to go to the bar, the 104 degree hot tub (yikes), and the conch train tour of Key West. And that’s just the beginning… There’s still the sunset festival, with the Cat Man (“Show your reverse!”…. inside joke), walking on the boardwalk, and oh so many other things. And of course, we had more travel woes coming home. In fact, all of us did, and we were all on different flights and on two different airlines. *sigh*
Anyway, we also had a great time with Suzanne’s parent’s, and they did a FANTASTIC JOB of taking care of Sarah while we were in Key West. Sarah is still talking about the fun she had with Maw Maw and Pappy, and I’ll bet she will be for quite a while.
These are some of the better pictures I took during the vacation. I really hope that you will enjoy them half as much as I enjoyed being there to take them. I’d really like to hear your comments, and you can leave them using the “Comments” link below this posting. Of course, you do have to register first (which you can do here) or using the register link on the right side.
Click on the Palm Tree to see the gallery of vacation photos. Enjoy!
Here’s a short video of Sarah playing Taka Taka Stop Stop on the E string. She will play it three times here. The second one probably sounds the closest to how it is supposed to sound, with the third one being a close second place. The first time through she hits the A string a couple of times; that’s why you hear the different tone. In any case, we are very impressed with her!!!
For my first video blog post ever, I have for you… Sarah’s Ballet Recital. It was about a month ago, so I am sorry for the lateness of it. I just figured out how to export video from my camera to the web.
This video player should work for all web browsers on all computers. You’ll probably need a pretty decent internet connection though, because the video is 26MB. If you are on dial-up, you probably won’t enjoy the experience at all. But if all you see below is a notice that you need to upgrade your flash player, then please just follow the link provided and do that. Then come back and enjoy the show. And who wouldn’t enjoy watching four-year-olds doing a ballet recital???
By the way, don’t forget that if you want to leave comments, you will have to register first by using the link on the right side (or just click here). And that will also allow you to receive email notifications of when I post new things here.
I hope you enjoy the movie!
If you haven’t heard, Sarah is taking violin lessons. She’s been taking them for a little over a month, and I have to say it is amazing how much a four-year-old can learn in such a short time. Her teacher, Miss Sue is fantastic and knows just the right balance of play and learning to keep it fun. Today Sarah had a recital in class where she had to play a solo. The song is only six notes long, so, no, she isn’t playing long ochestral pieces. But she does play it pretty good most of the time. Right now, she plays a song called “Taka Taka Stop Stop“, which is the first song you learn in the Suzuki method. She has a couple of private lessons each week and one group lesson every Saturday. She seems to really enjoy it, and she tells everyone that she has a violin. Kinda cool, huh? Be sure to click on the picture to see more pictures in the gallery from her recital.
You probably have noticed the new design of Pelorus.Org here. That’s because I had to change web servers. I pretty much outgrew my last web hosting company, and they told me that I was taking up too much space. So I had to move everything to another server. I was able to do it without too much pain, except that all the people who subscribed to my last blog are no longer subscribed. So, if you want to get an email whenever I post something new here, just register by clicking on the Register link on the right side menu (or click here). Registering also gives you the capability to leave comments after each post, which I always enjoy. Or, if you are into RSS feeds, you can subscribe to my blog’s feed by using one of the two rss links in the upper right corner (you probably want the “Posts” link). But the only way you can leave comments is to register. Sorry for that, but it’s the only way to keep the SpamBots out of here. Unfortunately, there was one other casualty when I moved servers. The pictures in my old blog postings are no long in the postings. The pictures are all still in the gallery, but they aren’t matched up to the blog posting that went with it. I’ve got a few more design changes that I want to make here at the site, but I hope you like it so far.
I am still working for the same company, but I do now have a full time customer that I am supporting. I work for a new Navy command called Surface Ship Life Cycle Management Activity, or SSLCM. We are working to make sure that our ships last the full 40 or 45 years that they are supposed to last. Sadly, in the past, we have had to decommission some ships because they weren’t being maintained properly. I am helping with the planning teams by doing statistical analysis and some modeling.
As a reminder, if you want to see what my brother has been up to, you can read his blog, “Heading to School“. And my mom’s blog, “Hidden Hems“, will keep you up to date with her life.
Nothing much to write tonight, but I thought I would share the pictures I took today. Click here for the album of eight pictures.
If you haven’t watched a four-year-old hunt for Easter eggs in your back yard, then your life is incomplete. Sarah just loves doing the Easter egg hunt. Yeah, we still have to help her find the eggs a little, but she just runs around the yard like a dog that was just let loose off of his chain hunting for the eggs. Of course she also enjoys all the Easter candy that the Easter bunny leaves each year too. Daddy may have to help her eat some of it.
My Mom is here for the week, and Sarah is really enjoying the extra attention. Good job, Grandma! Oh, and be sure to check out her new Daylily blog at http://hiddenhems.com.
I got a new toy for Easter. Well, two new toys actually. I got a Blu Ray player (nice) and a new camera, a Canon 5D Mark II (really, really nice). They should keep me entertained for a little while.
I got a few more pictures today. Click here for the whole album (8 images total).
Ok, Ok, I know. It’s been for….ev…er since I last posted. Shame on me. I’ll have to not let that happen again. But I think I have some pictures that you will like here.
Let’s see, what have we been up to? We are planning a Disney vacation for the end of May. Skip just got back from a business trip to Japan and Hawaii. We are also planning a Key West vacation for August. Skip’s new job is doing great with plenty of work to keep him busy now. Suzanne is still teaching at Old Dominion and will be for some time apparently. And Sarah is doing great at her Montessori school.
So that’s about it. Click here for the rest of the images.

I got the new Android G1 phone from t-Mobile and I can now (hopefully, if everything works correctly) post to my blog right from my phone. So stay tuned for more family updates.
